Sussex Stakes Time Up On The Downs

Wed 27 July 2016

Toormore, last years Lennox Stakes winner

Into day two of Glorious Goodwood and we are set for another big day of racing with the Sussex Stakes being the feature race on the card. Richard has eleven runners up and down the country with seven of those from the main meeting.

The son of Lope De Vega, owned by Michael Pescod gets the ball rolling in the Gordon Stakes. STEEL OF MADRID off the back of two good performances, winning the Listed Fairway Stakes at Newmarket and then to run fourth behind the eventual Eclipse winner, Hawkbill, in the Tercentenary Stakes at Royal Ascot, looks set to run a big race. ‘I have been waiting for the ground with him. He was going to run up at Hamilton last week but I pulled him out late when the rain came. He seems to be much happier on top of the ground and today he looks he have his ideal conditions. He has to reverse the form on the Godolphin runner but I can easily see him finishing in the first three.’

This looks to be another hot renewal of the Sussex Stakes, as TOORMORE takes his chance. His win in the Lennox Stakes last year and Sandown Mile Stakes this year will put him there form wise. ‘This is a tough ask, but he is in great order. He has already won a Lennox so in order to enhance his record we made the decision to come here. This is the first time the three year old milers are taking on the older horses so it will be interesting to see how they fair. We are in great shape and I hope for a good run.’

With four runners in the Fillies Maiden over six furlongs, this puts the team in a good position to get a winner. ‘LIMELITE wasn’t right last time at Lingfield and is right back to her best here. If she runs like she did on debut I can see her running a big race. SUFFRAGETTE CITY ran home well the other day at Newmarket and looks a filly full of promise. CURRY and PROMISING are both having their retrospective debuts and whatever they do today they will improve upon.’

The final runner at Goodwood is the last start winner SHAAN. She won well at Newmarket last time and Richard said after that success that she should improve for that run having been off the track a little while. ‘I think she has a great chance and with the necessary improvement should put her right there.’

Of the other runners, BRAZTIME makes her debut at Leicester in a six furlong Maiden. ‘She is a nice filly by Canford Cliffs. William Haggas has a Frankel Colt in there so it will be interesting to see what we are up against. I think she will be a lovely filly in time however.’
