2000 Guineas Day

Fri 05 May 2017

Tomorrow is a big day for both the yard and the industry as we have not only the first Classic but also the first Group 1 of the year. Richard is sending two of the ten runners to post including the second favourite in BARNEY ROY. The colt, now owned by Godolphin, has had just two starts in his life and won both in convincing fashion. He is the son of Excelebration who undoubtedly, were it not for Frankel, have won plenty more races at Group 1 level. His emphatic victory at Haydock in a Maiden last year prompted the sale to go through and he seems to have progressed into a lovely colt proving himself in the Group 3 Greenham Stakes at Newbury on his last start. LARCHMONT LAD is our other runner and is bringing some solid two year old form to the table. He is the son of another Coolmore stallion in the shape of Footstepsinthesand and also won his maiden in emphatic style at Sandown. He progressed from there to take the Group 3 Sommerville Tattersalls Stakes beating some likely types and showing a liking to the Rowley Mile. He was definitely in need of his first run in the Craven and has come on plenty for the race. Chevely Park Stud bought him at the beginning of the season and he is a horse that they could have plenty of fun with.

Other runners at Newmarket on the day consist of ELTEZAM, who appears to be getting fitter the more he runs. He has been working well at home and should make a bolder show tomorrow. MOSTAHEL and EQTIRAAN take their chances in the six furlong handicap, with the former having showed plenty of speed at Wolverhampton in a Maiden and looks a serious contender up in grade. EQTIRAAN didn’t get home the other day at Lingfield and should be much better suited to a strongly run six furlongs. He will be allowed to bowl along and should be there at the finish. SON OF THE STARS has recently been bought by Qatar Racing and looks a serious horse to go to war with. He has won his first two starts in impressive style and looks one who is very well treated.

RITA’S MAN was the winner of the last at Redcar yesterday and has improved plenty from his first run. He should be capable of winning another race off a similar mark.

Today’s racing comes from Chepstow and Lingfield, with last start winner HABBAD and PREROGATIVE both taking their chances over the border. WILLWAMS is running in the claimer off the back of another victory. They all head there with chances and it could be a good day for the yard who continues to roll in the winners.
