Mums Tipple back to winning ways

Mon 15 March 2021

Having shocked the racing community back in August 2019 when romping to an emphatic success in the Goffs Premier Yearling Stakes at York, MUMS TIPPLE never managed to capture that same level of form last year and left us scratching our heads.

His work has always remained of a very high standard so we never lost of faith in him and his owners (Marian Lyons & Patricia Zanelli) have been exceptionally patient and understanding. We gelded him over the winter and he showed something of his old sparkle when finishing close up on his racecourse return at Lingfield under Ryan Moore.

He did a good piece of work ahead of the Lady Wulfruna at Wolverhampton so we were confident of a big run. He found some trouble in running at Lingfield so Ryan kept it simple this time and made plenty of use of him to sit nicely in behind the leaders. When asked for an effort he put the race to bed in good style to win comfortably by 2 1/4 lengths recapturing some of his old form. The win meant a lot to us as a yard, he was such a promising two year old and it looks like he might fulfil some of that promise this season. Huge congratulations are in order to all connections.

As Ryan said "It’s very nice for the owners as last year was a mess for many reasons really. He ran a fine race over six at Lingfield and the seven furlongs suited him. There were some good horses in there today, but the race worked out well for him and he’s gone and won really nicely.”

Richard has always stood by MUMS TIPPLE and deserves plenty of credit for getting him back to somewhere near his best "He worked very well during the week and it’s nice to see him back after his encouraging run at Lingfield. He’s a very good horse and it’s been a little bit unfair as he gets knocked every time he runs. People want to see a similar performance to what he did at York each time, but that was one of the best performances I’ve seen by any horse – even I was shocked by that – and people haven’t given him a break since that. He’s got an awful lot of ability so it’s nice to see him win, and win very well, at that level. Hopefully he can build on that for the rest of the year and we’ll probably go for the Mile on Finals’ Day. It’s satisfying to see him win like the horse we think he is.”
